Prof. Maximilian Y. Emmert
Maximilian Emmert is a full professor and the Director of Cardiosurgical Research at Charite University Medicine and German Heart Center Berlin, Germany with a main clinical focus on CABG, LAA management and transcatheter technologies. In parallel, he also holds a professorship for Translational Cardiac Surgery at the Institute for Regenerative Medicine (IREM), University of Zurich, Switzerland. He obtained a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the Technical University Eindhoven, The Netherlands in 2013 and has extensive experience in basic, preclinical and translational research with a main focus on regenerative medicine including cardiovascular bioengineering for organ and tissue repair and regeneration.
His research has led to major achievements in the field of regenerative medicine such as the development of clinically-relevant platforms for off-the-shelf next-generation biomimetic cardiovascular implants. Maximilian Emmert has published more than 250 scientific articles in high-ranking, international scientific journals including Science Translational Medicine, European Heart Journal, JACC, Circulation and many others. He has been very successful in acquiring grants and third party funding (>20 Mio. USD) such as from the European Framework programs, the Wyss Zurich, Innosuisse, the Swiss Heart Foundation, and many others. He was also awarded a very prestigious grant from the European Research Council (ERC).
For his work, he has received numerous awards such as the prestigious Pfizer Prize from the Pfizer Research Foundation, Switzerland, the Innovation Award of the European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgery, or the renowned Siegenthaler Award from the University of Zurich where he was named as the distinguished translational researcher 2016 for his scientific achievements in the field of translational cardiovascular regenerative medicine.
Based on his strong clinician-scientist background, Maximilian Emmert also serves as a consultant and advisor for numerous established medtech and biotech companies helping to accelerate the clinical translation and implementation of new products. He is further involved as a founder and board member in several start-up projects and enterprises in the field of innovative medical devices, biomimetic and biotech solutions.
Before moving to the University Hospital Zurich for cardiac surgery specialty training in 2008, Maximilian Emmert obtained basic medical training from 2001-2007 at the Universities of Hamburg and Hannover, Germany, as well as at the prestigious King`s and Imperial College London, UK and at the University Hospitals in Sydney and Singapore.
