Prof. Dr. Bruno Podesser

Bruno Podesser can be considered a truly translational surgeon scientist. His clinical and research focus has always been ischemia-reperfusion injury and during recent years remodelling and reverse remodeling under pressure and volume overload.

Bruno Podesser was born and raised in a small village in the Austrian Alps. After 8 years in boarding school and one year of military service he studied medicine at the University of Vienna. He performed his residency and training in general surgery followed by a training in cardiac surgery at the Allgemeine Krankenhaus Wien (General Hospital Vienna, Prof. Ernst Wolner), the Medical University of Innsbruck and the University Hospital St. Pölten. In 1996 he finished his MBA at the Vienna School of Economics and received a prestigious Max Kade Fellowship to perform a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the Whittaker Institute at Boston University (Prof. Carl Apstein), USA.

In 2001, Bruno Podesser habilitated in cardiac surgery and was appointed consultant at the Department of Cardiac Surgery at University Hospital St. Pölten- a clinical position that he holds until today. 2006, he became the founding coordinator of the “Ludwig Boltzmann Cluster for Cardiovascular Research” at the Medical University of Vienna, where he still serves in the board of directors. In 2014 he was appointed full professor and head of the Center for Biomedical Research and Translational Surgery at the Medical University of Vienna. 2019 he became “Honorary Member of the Hungarian Society of Cardiology”, 2021 he was appointed “Adjunct Professor to the Cape Heart Institute”, Cape Town University, SA, in 2022 he received a “Dr. honoris causa, Semmelweis University Budapest, Hungary and in 2024 he became vice president of the “Cardiac Surgery Intersociety Alliance”, an alliance between all major surgical societies including AATS, STS, EACTS, ASCTS and the World Heart Federation aiming to bring cardiac surgery to the underdeveloped countries.

Bruno Podesser has published more than 205 peer reviewed manuscripts with a total impact factor of more than 1600. He has received multiple prestigous awards such as the Billroth Award of the Austrian Society of Surgery or the Hancock Award of the German Society of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery. He serves currently as Associate Editor for the European Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery, the ESC Heart Failure and the Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology and Toxicology. Bruno Podesser is happyly married and has 2 grown-up children; besides his family his passion belongs to gardening, hunting and skiing
